Toxic Mold - Selling Bonds for Mold Fix

Mold damage can be expensive: Southern Illinois University Edwardsville spent $10 million over the summer to remove mold from three residence halls, including one that just opened in 2001.

According to university officials, the mold was caused by moisture buildup within the walls. How are they paying the huge bills? Selling bonds.

Mold: Impossible To Kill?

Mold — neither plant nor animal, but a fungus that grows, feeds and multiplies by spreading seeds called spores — is almost impossible to kill. Once it grows in wooden beams and carpeting, its life is virtually eternal.

Mold can be fought, even temporarily contained, with bleaches and other solutions. But ridding a home or any building completely of toxic mold is almost impossible without spending thousands of dollars removing "infected" areas, including paint, carpeting, wallpaper, even old shoes and baseball gloves.
