Spotted ceilings and walls covered with what appeared to be black mold, caused by an unrepaired water leak.
No running water in the bathroom sink, no cold water in the kitchen
sink and holes exposing wooden studs in many of the walls,
torn out by plumbers searching for leaks.
Horrendous living conditions. It's really happening here.
On another place, tenants of an apartment complex
confronted their landlord Thursday about toxic mold growing in their
homes. Their children are getting sick.
The tenants said their children have
suffered from health problems since the summer. The children who live
in the complex face those problems every day.
The cause of those problems could be toxic mold growing in their walls and ceilings. Experts said cleaning up the apartments
will not be easy. Professionals would need time to clear up the
problem, which could cost $40,000.
Mold has been linked
to a myriad of health conditions. Some of these are well-documented.
Others are still unproven, and not accepted by many medical
authorities. Most everyone has some of the symptoms attributed to mold
some of the time.
Scientists are working on answers for questions about mold. Most of the questions are remaining unanswered.
But experts do agree on one thing: Indoor mold can lead to health problems. It needs to be reduced or eliminated.
